Vegan Apple Pie Crispy Rice Paper Dumplings
Surely you have seen the HUGE trend of rice paper dumplings in 2021, yeah? And if you somehow haven’t, well, you are in for a treat! Especially because these crispy rice paper dumplings are sweet and not savory, which I have not seen done yet! These little dumplings are stuffed with apple pie filling, fried and coated in cinnamon sugar, and dipped in cream cheese icing. They are easy and super fun to make and, of course, DELICIOUS!
So, What is Rice Paper?
Rice paper is thin, nearly see-through edible paper made from rice flour and water. They are most commonly known for creating spring rolls. At first, the sheets are crackly-like, but once they are held underwater for a few seconds, they become very soft, flexible, and sticky. From here on, you can stuff, roll, and even cook them.

Rice Paper Dumplings
Near the end of 2021, rice paper dumplings became SUPER popular on social media, and for good reasons! To make them, I stuff wet sheets of rice paper with a filling of my choice, fold them into little squares, sear in oil until crispy, and serve with desired dipping sauce. I’ve made crispy rice paper dumplings with Asian-style fillings, crab cakes, and even sweet fillings such as this apple pie version. I love getting creative with them because they’re so easy and fun to make and super versatile!
What Do They Taste Like?
The texture of them is chewy, with crispiness on the very outside. However, the rice paper sheets do not have a flavor. So, the dumplings really taste like whatever you stuff them with and dip them in, which is cool, in my opinion! These vegan apple pie dumplings taste like, well, apple pie, minus the crust, of course, and then with the addition of cream cheese icing. They’re so unique but super delicious.

Vegan Apple Pie Crispy Rice Paper Dumplings
Ingredients
Apple Pie Filling
- 2 cups red apples, peeled, thinly sliced, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
- 2 tbsp organic brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp + 1 tsp cornstarch
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 3 tbsp organic cane sugar
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
Cream Cheese Dip
- 3 tbsp vegan cream cheese (I use Kite Hill's), softened at room temperature
- 2 tbsp vegan butter, softened at room temperature
- 1/2 cup organic powdered sugar
- 1 tbsp cashew milk, plain, unsweetened (You can also use almond, soy, or coconut milk!)
You Will Also Need
- 14 small spring roll rice wrappers
- 1 tbsp coconut oil, for cooking
Instructions
Apple Pie Filling
- Add all ingredients to a medium-sized mixing bowl and gently toss to combine evenly. Allow the filling to rest for 15 minutes to help soften the apples slightly.
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- Add the ingredients to a wide, shallow bowl and stir to combine evenly. Set aside.
Cream Cheese Dip
- Sift the powdered sugar into a small bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and then stir with a fork until completely smooth. Pour into a small serving dish for dipping.
How to Assemble the Dumplings
- 1. To assemble a dumpling, place a sheet of rice paper on a large plate.2. Run the plate with the rice paper under hot water in your sink for around 5 seconds or do. Do NOT hold it under for too long, or the rice paper will become too soft and not usable.3. While underwater, rub your fingers around the paper to help soften it and keep it in the center of the plate.4. Lastly, after the paper is softened, gently rub your hand over the paper to remove all of the water.
- Keep the piece of rice paper on the plate. Place two tablespoons of the apple filling in the center, creating a square-like shape.
- To wrap the dumpling, take the top half of the rice paper and tightly, but gently, pull it over the filling. Then, take the bottom half of the rice paper and fold it over the filling. Now, take the right side of the paper and fold it over the filling. Lastly, take the left side of the paper and fold it over the filling. Now you should have a square/rectangle dumpling.
- The dumplings need to be double wrapped, so repeat the very first assembly step and then place the wrapped dumpling in the center. Place the side with all of the excess rice paper folds face DOWN. So, the thinner side with no folds should be facing up; that way, when you wrap it this second time, both sides of the dumpling will have the same amount of rice paper folds. Please see my TikTok video above the recipe to visualize the steps!
How to Cook the Dumplings
- Place a large saute pan over medium heat. Once hot, add in one tablespoon of coconut oil. Once the oil is hot, add in a few of the dumplings. Cook both sides of the dumplings for 4 to 4 1/2 minutes, pressing them down now and then to ensure they are flat to the pan, getting them evenly crispy. Then, place them on a wire rack to prevent them from getting soggy while cooking the rest of the dumplings.
- Repeat the previous step with the other dumplings. *I do not cook all of the dumplings at the same time because if you cook them too closely together, they will more than likely touch each other at some point. Then the rice paper will tear, and the filling will spill out.
- Once all of the dumplings have been cooked, you can generously coat them with cinnamon sugar on all sides and serve with the cream cheese dip. Eat immediately for the best texture.
